The Subaru Forester has been a staple compact crossover SUV since 1997 when the Japanese manufacturer first released it.
Since then, the Forester has built up a solid reputation for being the perfect family SUV that won’t ever let you down and will last a lifetime. At least, this is what most people assume, but many Forester owners have had their fair share of issues with the SUV.
That said, it is still as popular today as it was two decades ago. If you’re in the market for a new SUV and might be considering buying a new Forester, or maybe a secondhand one, here are some Subaru Forester Problems to take into account before investing in one.
Subaru Forester Problems By Model
Starting in 1997, there have been quite a few changes made to the Foresters over the years. The most significant issues are found in the 2011-2014 variants, although there are still issues with the previous and the next generation of Foresters.
For this list, we’ll be starting with the 2003 Foresters and work our way up…
2003 Subaru Forester Issues
Being an older model, you can expect any of the issues that come with high mileage and older vehicles. The 2003 Foresters did not have turbos. A turbo option was introduced in 2004.
However, these older Subaru Forester engines do not suffer from any real technical issues, as found on newer computerized models these days, making them easier and generally cheaper to fix. That said, there are still some common issues that owners of these Foresters seem to have.
Many owners have noted that before 100,000 miles, the electrical windows either stop working entirely or become slow or won’t shut completely.
Air Bag issues
A lot of owners have issues with the airbag light turning on and off randomly. Some owners have even had the airbags fail to deploy, which can lead to traumatic injuries.
These Foresters seem to have issues with seals around the car being torn easily or not sealing correctly. Some owners also report problems with the frame of the vehicle rusting over time.
2006 Subaru Forester Issues
The 2006 Foresters are a great choice among crossover SUV vehicles, offering decent fuel economy, excellent handling, and adequate acceleration. It does lack a little in the design department, with a basic-looking interior as well as a lack of legroom for the back seat.

These Foresters are known for head gaskets failing and engine misfires when accelerating heavily. This can lead to engine failure or significant power loss.
Engine failure can be costly to fix, so it is best to get your engine checked out immediately if you experience any loss of power.
2009 Subaru Forester Issues
The 2009 Foresters saw the whole SUV being completely redesigned to compete with the rest of the SUVs that were currently on the market, like the Toyota RAV4 and Dodge Journey.
With the redesign came some interior accessory issues as well as engine and heating system issues.
Just like the 2006 models, these also suffered from head gasket issues, specifically leaking. They are also known for excessive oil consumption, which could lead to knocking. If you encounter these issues, the only way to really fix it would be to get a whole new engine, which is remarkably costly.
The most common interior issue with 2009 Foresters is the lock-in key that stops working or malfunctioning. This could mean that you are locked out of your car for some time or permanently. The only solution would be to have it towed to the nearest dealer or mechanic.
There are a few more issues like the front seats collapsing mechanisms breaking or the built-in compass malfunctioning.
2011 – 2015 Subaru Forester Issues
The Subaru Foresters released between 2011 – 2015 should be avoided altogether.
These vehicles had plenty of significant issues, and a class-action lawsuit was opened. Owners claimed that these vehicles used more than average amounts of oil, claiming the cause of it was defective engines.
Not only did they consume too much oil, but it led to oil leaking, knocking, and unintentional acceleration. The only way to address these issues was a complete engine change, which is obviously super expensive.
But there’s more…
They also had issues with the suspension as well as transmission issues. The coil springs would be worn out around 50,000 miles, which could cost upwards of $1000 to fix.
The transmission issues were also no laughing matter, with the car constantly rolling downhill while in parked mode and whining when driving.
Note that I added the 2015 models together with the problematic 2011-2014 models since most of the complaints and issues with those models are prominent on the 2015 models as well.
2017 Subaru Forester Issues
The 2017-2018 models are the last before the latest remodel that came out in 2019. Although having fewer issues than the problematic 2011-2015 models, these still had their fair share of problems.
Although not as bad, the transmission on these models suffered from being jittery whilst driving. This occurs primarily at lower speeds when accelerating at lower gears.
Engine stalling is the primary concern among these models. They also still suffer from using a lot of oil, leading to further possible issues down the road.
2019 Subaru Forester Issues
The newly remodeled 2019 models and onwards have dealt with most of the issues that plagued Subaru during the 2010s.
Firstly, the interior was redecorated and designed to be more modern and boasted a more user-friendly dashboard and interface. They also upped their safety scores and made the back seat much comfier.
Sounds good, so are they free of issues?
Nope. Some owners still find that the engine is underpowered and that the car struggles to accelerate.
With all that in mind, the 2021 Forester does rank high, with an average of 7.1 for performance and 7.9 for its interior. According to the consumer reports website, the new 2021 model has the highest reliability score of all the other compact SUVs and ranks it as the best in class.

Sure, the Forester is still an extremely popular SUV but has its fair share of issues. The older models are excellent secondhand purchases, especially for a larger family.
The newer models make up for the mid-2010 models’ issues, but it might be hard to ever trust Subaru again if you had one of those and experienced all the problems.
