So, you’re looking to sell your car. And, of course, you want to get the best price possible.

Carmax is the nation’s largest used car retailer for a reason. Thanks to decades of TV commercials, you would have had to have been living under a boulder not to be at least familiar with the company. They have actually been in business since the early 1990s and have store locations in most states, meaning you won’t have to travel far to find one.

Last month I was looking to upgrade from my 2007 Subaru Outback to something a little more current, so I thought I would take the chance to document my experience to make it easier when you come to selling your car to Carmax.

How to get your car appraised by CarMax

First things first, you will need to get an appraisal done. Two options here: online or in-store.

But before we get into the appraisal process, I’ll give you a rundown of steps I took before taking my car in:

  • You’ll want your car to look as good as possible. I gave my Outback a thorough clean inside and out.
  • Make sure there are no engine lights or other warnings showing on the dash.
  • Make any minor repairs that you think will help increase the value.
  • I also went on a weekday morning to beat the crowds.

Online Appraisal

How to get your car appraised by CarMax

For CarMax to give you an accurate appraisal, you will need to provide spot-on info regarding the condition of your car. I suggest you be totally honest here because if and when you decide to accept any appraisal offer, your car will be checked thoroughly in person.

What information do you need to provide?

Begin with entering your license plate number or vehicle identification number (VIN). Once you have done this, a bunch of the other information is automatically gathered.

Then you need to enter any info regarding optional extras your car has. This may include information like:

  • Window tint
  • Sunroof
  • Leather or heated seating
  • Alloy wheels
  • Towbars
  • Performance parts

The list goes on, but I’m sure you get the point.

Car Max also needs to know the vehicle’s current mileage, plus any damage the car has received in its lifetime.

Next stages…

Once this is all done, you’ll be ready to proceed to the next stage, where you will receive your appraisal, which is good for up to seven days. If you decide to accept their offer, you will have to take your car for a physical inspection to ensure the information you have provided on the vehicle is all correct.

In-Store Appraisal

If you prefer to just take your car in for an appraisal, the process is quick and easy. If you need to find your closest dealership, then simply check out CarMax.Com/Stores.

You can book an appointment with Carmax by calling your local dealership or online and scroll down to find the “Schedule an in-person offer at CarMax” section. I was able to book an appointment for the very next day, and the process took less than one hour from start to finish. You can also just turn up without an appointment, and you should be looked after pretty quickly.

Be prepared…

If you want to sell or trade-in your car then and there, make sure to bring the following items with you:

  • Drivers license
  • Title of the vehicle (sometimes referred to as the “pink slip”)
  • Car registration
  • Any info regarding any loan that may still be outstanding
  • All of the keys, including any extra fobs
  • If there is another person on the title of the car, they will also have to join you unless you have a legal letter to get around this

Then came the fun part…

It was at this point that a salesperson came up and offered to show me what cars were currently available to buy or trade-in for. I had a quick wander around the lot to see what was available until I was called back to receive the appraisal. This comes in the form of a non-negotiable offer that is valid for seven days.

You have a few options at this point…

If you choose to accept their offer, then and there you’ll be handed a check on the spot, and off you go! If like me, you were looking for a trade-in, then the next step is to head out into the lot to find your new car. I had forgotten how exciting this part of the process was; I truly felt like a kid in a toy shop again.

If you are not thrilled with the offer, or you decide that you want to check out other options, then your offer is valid for seven days, no questions asked. Keep in mind that CarMax may not always offer the highest dollar amount for your exact vehicle. So, if you want to try to sell privately, this 7-day window is a perfect opportunity.

In my case…

The process of finding my new car was actually super simple, with the exact vehicle I was looking for sitting in the lot. I was more than happy with the trade-in offer I received. Plus, the price of my new car was actually a little less than I had anticipated.

If you are still locked into a loan, don’t stress, the finance officers at CarMax will do all the heavy lifting on your behalf and make sure the process is a breeze. On the off chance there’s a difference between what CarMax offers you and what you still owe, you will need to pay this amount before the sale can be finished up.

So you have navigated the whole process, are happy with the offer, and are ready to close.

What’s next?

Simply state your intention to accept the offer. You will then be led to the finance section, where a finance officer will take over. This part of the process took about 30 mins from choosing the car I wanted to being handed the keys and driving away! Just sign a few forms, and you’re done, simple as that.

One thing to mention…

Remember, there is no use in trying to negotiate at this point, or at any point, to be honest. The price is what they give you, and there’s no budging whatsoever, unfortunately.
