1 SENA 20S-EVO-01 – Best All Round Motorcycle Helmet Speakers

There are only a few companies that, when talking about accessories for a motorbike, come to mind. Senna is one of these. This is more than just a speaker. It is a communications system and for that reason will be considered as one of the better motorcycle helmet speakers.

An all-rounder…

The Sena Evo 01 is quite an all-rounder. It has some excellent features that make it stand out. For a start, it can hold communications via Bluetooth for up to eight people over about a 2 km range. This means you can stay in contact with your fellow riders up to that distance. Using your connection, you can connect up to any of your devices to use playlists. It will keep you informed via your GPS of directions, and it also has FM functionality.

Voice command…

If your smartphone has the correct features, it can be controlled through voice commands. It is fitted with Bluetooth 4.1 technology, which gives you a clear reception through speakers that are of good quality. It will also communicate with other headsets even if they are not Sena models.

Hands-free calls…

The SENA 20S-EVO-01 can be paired to two mobile phones at the same time and allow you hands-free calls. It will remove quite a lot of the ambient noise around you, but we’re not sure that it is such a good idea.

Overall…

The receiver is located on the top of the helmet, which doesn’t seem a particularly good idea if it rains. That ought to be something that should be considered. However, it is quite a compact little unit at only 3.7 by 1.9 by 1 inch and weighing only just over two ounces. It runs on a Lithium Polymer battery, and it’s not the cheapest of options.

SENA 20S-EVO-01
Our rating:4.4 out of 5 stars (4.4 / 5)

Pros

  • Some excellent features.
  • Excellent communication options.

Cons

  • Not so good if you are subject to a lot of rain.

2 Cardo Audio & Microphone Kit – Best Advanced Motorcycle Helmet Speakers

Another well-known company for providing audio for the motorcycle is Cardo. They have been producing audio equipment for the two-wheeled fraternity since 2004. They are notorious for producing high-end products, and therefore they must be a contender in this review.

Advanced system…

This particular unit is an advanced system that has up to date communication options with an intuitive interface. It uses both what is known as Dynamic Mesh Communication, or DMC, with Bluetooth 4.1. This gives you all the options you need for full communication since DMS is a powerful system that offers a high-level of intercom communications.

In the past, riders using just Bluetooth would have to stay close together to maintain the network. It was known as a linear pairing, and if one dropped out, the network would collapse. If the system collapsed, the others would need to stop and regroup to regain the group communication platform.

Not so with DMS…

DMS maintains communication within the network for each person individually. So, even if the group splits up, those within the range of the speaker stay connected. And if one steps outside of the field, there is a quick pairing facility that reconnects them the moment they come back within range.

All very smart and efficient…

The Cardo Audio & Microphone Kit will handle group networks from 2 to 15 within a range of five miles, which is quite a considerable distance. It has a dual intercom arrangement, bike to bike, which covers a distance of about a mile. The range up to 5 miles is covered by group pack mode.

Clear sound…

Bluetooth is not redundant, though, as it is there for making and receiving calls. It also operates the GPS, and hearing music via the FM radio that is built-in. Bluetooth will also pair up with your phone for playing your own playlists, and these are high-quality speakers delivering a very clear sound.

Automatic volume adjustment…

It has audio that will adjust to your environment, which means the speakers will change the volume levels in relation to the ambient noise. They can also be controlled via voice commands for hands-free operation.

Waterproof…

The speakers are waterproof, so in a heavy shower, they are protected. We think this is a very technological piece of kit at what is a lovely price.

Cardo Audio & Microphone Kit
Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

Pros

  • A good, strong build.
  • Waterproof.
  • Excellent comms.
  • DMS and Bluetooth.

Cons

  • At this price point, none.

3 UClear Digital Pulse Wired Drop-in High Definition Helmet Speakers – Most Budget Motorcycle Helmet Headset

If you are new to the idea of having headphones in your motorcycle helmet, then these might be a good option for you.

Great for a first buy, because…

The UClear Digital Pulse Wired Drop-in High Definition Helmet Speakers are set at an entry-level price, but they do perform very well. They will give you an excellent sound with prominent bass, and nice crisp highs.

They are not the best at high volumes, however, and a reasonable approach to their use in terms of volume will be required. That is not to say that they are quiet, but at their maximum, they tend to start to distort. However, they do give you reliability and are versatile in how you use them.

High level of comfort…

They are compatible with smartphones, MP3 players, and even other helmet communication systems. The speakers have a very comfortable thick foam padding that gives a high level of comfort, and they are slim enough to be able to be used with the majority of helmet styles.

Interchangeable between helmets…

If you are a rider, who likes to alternate helmets depending upon weather circumstances, these are ideal. The fitting is easy and straightforward, and with the Velcro supplied, very quick and convenient.

All in all…

These speakers do have their limits and are not endowed with the high tech of some options, but the sound is good, the fitting is easy, and the performance is very reliable. They represent a perfect entry into motorcycle helmet speakers, and, at the price point, they are an excellent option.

UClear Digital Pulse Wired Drop-in High Definition Helmet Speakers
Our rating:4.1 out of 5 stars (4.1 / 5)

Pros

  • Easy to fit.
  • Interchangeable between helmets.
  • Good sound.
  • Very comfortable to wear.
  • Great price.

Cons

  • Some will want more communication features.

4 LEXIN LX-R6 2pcs Bluetooth Motorcycle Helmet Intercom Headset – Best Group Ride Motorcycle Helmet Speakers

This unit from Lexin is more than just a set of headphones. It is a system designed to play and listen to music and make and receive calls. But it is also a communications system between riders.

Riders groups will love this…

This model is designed to work with groups of riders that want or need to stay in contact. Communications can be maintained for up to six, and it has a range of over half a mile. It operates with Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP. This allows you to listen to your music when linked to a phone or other device, and you also stay in contact with your GPS and can handle your calls hands-free.

Fits most helmets…

The LEXIN LX-R6 will fit into most helmet designs, including full-face and open-face, as well as flip front models. They are made to be water-resistant, and there is a 3.5mm aux socket for connecting external non-Bluetooth connected devices.

Impressive volume too…

One thing you will notice with these headphones is that they have a very generous volume level. It’s quite an increase in some other models around. It also comes with all the necessary fitting requirements.

Pillion rider comms…

This is a sound system and works well with its comms, especially for communicating with a pillion rider. Any communication between anyone in the group will cease the music so the conversation can be heard, and it will resume after the conversation is finished.

We think it’s a very decent system at a very competitive price.

LEXIN LX-R6 2pcs Bluetooth Motorcycle Helmet Intercom Headset
Our rating:3.9 out of 5 stars (3.9 / 5)

Pros

  • Music, calls, and inter-rider comms.
  • Competitive price.

Cons

  • Speakers are quite thick and not easy to wear.

5 Outdoor Tech Helmet Chips 2.0 Audio Headset – Best Button Control Motorcycle Helmet Speakers

This is a headset system that is built for its convenience of use. It is compatible with any helmet that has slots that will allow audio drop-ins, but it will be a good idea to check compatibility first, as some headsets do not have the right design features.

Sweat-resistant…

These speakers have 40mm drivers and will push out a decent volume. They are Bluetooth 4.0 compatible and have an A2DP profile. The Outdoor Tech Helmet Chips will operate at the standard Bluetooth operating distance of 32 feet, and they are also sweat-resistant and able to function in cold weather.

Siri voice control…

These speakers are battery-driven, and each charge will give you a playtime of about ten hours, which is probably going to suffice even on a long road trip. You can also use Siri voice control via the built-in microphone.

The design layout is well organized, and each earpiece has one oversized button. It is made a little larger so that you can operate it without removing your gloves.

Button press combinations…

There are some basic and straightforward combinations of button presses to allow you to access any of the features you require. These include music management and also receiving calls. It also means you won’t have to remove your connected phone from your pocket.

Walkie-talkie…

You should be aware that this unit does offer a walkie-talkie facility. We have not mentioned it here because, as we understand at this time, the app that controls it is not fully functional. That can change, of course, so it is a good idea to check to see if that situation has been resolved.

It is quite a cost-effective unit, though doesn’t have the features that other systems enjoy.

Outdoor Tech Helmet Chips 2.0 Audio Headset
Our rating:3.9 out of 5 stars (3.9 / 5)

Pros

  • Attractive price point.
  • Very good operating control design.
  • Ease of use.

Cons

  • Lacking in some features.
  • Walkie talkie option might not be available.

6 Sena SMH10-10 Motorcycle Bluetooth Headset / Intercom (Single) – Easiest to Fit Motorcycle Helmet Speakers

We’re back to Sena for another system. This is one that will be very familiar to some riders as it has been around for several years, and it is still prevalent.

Great for regular long-distance riders…

Sena SMH10-10 has been designed to keep people in contact with each other. It can operate over a distance of about 1000 yards, and if you are often covering distances that are quite long, this is a good option.

A full charge will give the battery about 12 hours of use, and it has a standby time of about ten days. It has the universal intercom protocols built-in, and it is compatible with Bluetooth. The model will connect to devices using either A2DP or HSP/HPF profiles.

Jog dial…

There is an intelligent volume adjustment feature included using a jog dial, which will also remember the volume levels you have set for previous devices. This means when you use each device, it will revert to the last set operating volume level. That saves a lot of potential adjustments when moving from one source to another.

Clamping system…

It is easy to fit using a clamping system that fits virtually all helmet designs. Sena also makes available a variety of different clamps to suit various installations if required. These, though, are extras and not included.

Track record of reliability…

Being an original design with a few years behind it, you may find systems that are better equipped. As an example, it uses Bluetooth 3, whereas many newer models use Bluetooth 4. However, you will not find a system that has been so successful with such a good performance level. It, therefore, has a track record of reliability.

Overall…

At this price point, these headphones make a strong contender for the best motorcycle helmet speakers for ease of installation. But, moreover, it’s an excellent headphone system by a recognized and respected manufacturer.

Sena SMH10-10 Motorcycle Bluetooth Headset / Intercom (Single)
Our rating:4.3 out of 5 stars (4.3 / 5)

Pros

  • Easy to install and use system.
  • Track record of reliability.
  • Good performance.

Cons

  • Bluetooth is not the latest release.

7 Sena (SMH5-UNIV) Bluetooth Headset and Intercom for Scooters/Motorcycles – Best Basic Motorcycle Helmet Speakers

Back we go to Sena once again. As far as Sena is concerned, the SMH5-UNIV model is one of their more basic and hence more cost-effective options. It is a simple enough unit but with specific constraints, and it lacks some of the features other headsets possess.

As an example…

You can only pair up with one other headset at a time, so there cannot be multi-level communication. It is designed to connect the rider and the passenger rather than a group of riders. The battery life is quite reasonable at eight hours, and it has a rechargeable Lithium battery. All fittings are included with the helmet attachments, and it also comes with both a wired microphone as well an attachable boom mic.

It has Bluetooth 3.0, which will maintain a connection up to 400 yards providing there is a line of sight.

Simple, functional…

Controls on the headset are easy to use and quite functional. There is a button that you push to answer calls. After the call is disconnected, it will return you to your music. The jog dial and control button make it easy to flip through all the options for music management while you ride, and it is just a case of pushing the button repeatedly. It weighs 13.2 ounces, so it is not particularly lightweight.

Affordable…

This is, of course, not one of Sena’s top of the range models, and the speaker quality is not as good as other models. It is, however, set at a decent price point for one of their products, and this will make it an attractive option for some.

Sena (SMH5-UNIV) Bluetooth Headset and Intercom for Scooters/Motorcycles
Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

Pros

  • Easy to use controls.
  • Bluetooth 3.
  • Cost-effective price.

Cons

  • Some will want more features and options.

8 iMC Motorcom HS-H130P Open-Face Helmet Headset – Most Unobtrusive Motorcycle Helmet Headset

This helmet headset from iMC Motorcom is a very basic system that is designed for Harley Davidson cycles. It can fit bikes with a 7-pin audio fitting after about 1998 year of manufacture.

Unobtrusive…

The headsets are designed to be very simple to use and unobtrusive and weigh only 7.2 ounces. They are easy to install and comfortable to the touch. However, they are built rather thick and can, therefore, feel a little uncomfortable in use. The speakers themselves are a flat panel design. Mostly made of plastic, they have a metal casing, and they do have a decent volume level.

Compatible headset…

You do not need to make any helmet adjustments for these in fitting, and the supplied boom mic fits all types of helmet. They claim that the boom mic has directional noise canceling. This is possibly a little optimistic, and it is unlikely to be free of ambient noise when in use, which is not a bad thing in our view.

Half the price of the HD version…

This is a very basic and inexpensive product and needs to be viewed as such. There is no doubt it will work for some people, but not all. Its biggest attraction is that it is about half the price of the Harley Davidson version. If your expectation levels are not too high, this might suit as a cheaper option. It is best suited for those who do not wish to outlay too much.

iMC Motorcom HS-H130P Open-Face Helmet Headset
Our rating:4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Pros

  • Simple design and operation.
  • Cost-effective.

Cons

  • Quality is a little bit lacking.

9 FreedConn TCOM-SC – Best Compact Motorcycle Helmet Headset

This headset from FreedConn is a multi-tasking headset and communications package. It is Bluetooth 3.0 capable and supports A2DP and AVRCP. It has a rechargeable Polymer battery that will give you up to 10 hours of use and 300 hours of standby from a single charge.

This one has an LCD…

The intercom that is built-in to the helmet is suitable for riding in a small group and will support up to three riders over a range of 800 meters. Unlike most systems, this has an LCD screen that gives you information regarding music management, call status, battery condition, pairing, etc. While it is in use, you can answer calls, listen to your music, or receive messages from a GPS.

Traffic info and news…

It has a built-in FM radio which will give you not only music options but also traffic info and news. The quality of the sound received is assisted by DPS noise suppression.

The FreedConn TCOM-SC is supplied with a Bluetooth receiver and a USB cable. You get four soft felt-covered adhesive ear pads and speaker and headset. You also get a headset clip which will allow the unit to be attached to most motorcycle helmets.

Note…

It may not be compatible though with other systems, which might cause a problem in that it might not be able to pair up with any non FreedConn products. So, it might be a good idea to check the compatibility with other systems before purchase.

Compact and budget-friendly…

It is a beautiful compact unit measuring just 3.2 by 1 by 1.2 inches and weighing only one and a half ounces. Set at a very competitive price point is a good option for those on a budget.

FreedConn TCOM-SC
Our rating:4.4 out of 5 stars (4.4 / 5)

Pros

  • Easy to fit and use
  • Very cost-effective price.
  • Suitable for connection between small groups.

Cons

  • Some will want better features.

10 BE Headwear Bluetooth Headset – Safest Motorcycle Helmet Headset

This is an on-ear design headset designed by a company whose first priority seems to be the safety of the wearer. Of course, we all like to hear our music quite loud, but there are times and places. Riding at speed on a motorbike probably isn’t one of them.

Safety first…

BE Headwear has come up with this headset that is actually more background music. Its aim is not to give you a total music experience. What it does do is give you the music but lets the sound of cars and other noises around you into the mix.

They see that as being essential for safety reasons, and we can’t disagree. And for that reason, we will consider these to be one of the best motorcycle helmet speakers around.

Hands-free…

It has Bluetooth 4.0 and has a built-in mic for taking hands-free calls. Voice prompts add to the hands-free experience. It has a decent battery life of nine hours before it needs a recharge, and this model also has a nice slim design to offer comfort in use.

Water-resistant…

The speakers are held in place with Velcro and can be moved easily. They are fitted with reasonable 30mm speakers that will give you an acceptable sound, and they are also water-resistant. Not enough to take them swimming but enough to handle a downpour.

Helmet hook with mounts…

This is quite a basic system, and it won’t talk to other BE headsets, but it will instead talk to your phone. The headset comes with a Micro-USB cable for charging and a helmet hook with mounts.

This unit, while not being packed with features, is an excellent option. At this price point, you really can’t go wrong.

BE Headwear Bluetooth Headset
Our rating:3.9 out of 5 stars (3.9 / 5)

Pros

  • Safety oriented design.
  • Decent sound and fittings.
  • Very affordable price.

Cons

  • Some will want more features.

Best Motorcycle Helmet Speakers Buying Guide

It will depend to a large extent on how you intend to use these headphones systems for your motorcycle helmet, in deciding what model best for you.

Will you be riding alone or in a group of riders?

Motorcycle Helmet Speakers Review

Maybe you just need communications with a passenger. Whatever scenario, there is plenty to choose from, some better than others, and some with extra features. It will depend on what you need the communications for.

Of course, they all play music…

Some will have FM radio built-in, others a 3.5mm aux input to connect to non-Bluetooth devices.

Are you planning a long trip? If so, water-resistance might be essential since you can’t guarantee it won’t rain somewhere. What about battery life? How many hours a day on the road are you planning? You will need a battery life that will cover the extent of your day.

Our priorities for a set of headphones to use on a motorbike or scooter might be different to most.
