The Vibrelli Performance CO2 Inflator does not come with a CO2 cartridge, but it does, however, come with a couple of extras that we like.
First, it comes with a CO2 cartridge sleeve. This is essential in our eyes. If the CO2 inflator doesn’t come with one, you’ll need to buy one or make one yourself, which we’ll cover in the ‘Buying Guide’ a little later.

5 Portland Design Works Tiny Object CO2 Inflator
We have to hand it to the boys and girls at Portland – this thing is unique. And what makes it unique is the somewhat quirky cartridge cylinder sleeve.
The inflator is very small and compact, which helps to keep the weight nice and low. The fact that this also only has one connection for a Presta valve also helps to shave off a couple of extra grams.
Be sure before you buy this to make sure you don’t have any bikes with Schrader valves. Schrader valves are the same ones you find on a motorbike and car tires. They’re quite short and stubby. Presta valves are longer and thinner and have a small sealer that screws into the main body of the valve.
Generally speaking, road bikes, city bikes, and hybrids will have Presta valves. However, this isn’t always the case. It’s undoubtedly something you need to check first.
One of the advantages of only being suitable for use with Presta valves is that the inflator is a little easier to use. This is also helped by its good-sized regulator knob. This is an interesting idea.
There are two tire levers in this set. The larger of the tire levers have a CO2 bike inflator on the end. Since you’re almost certain to carry tire levers with you as part of your bike break down kit, this seems like a good idea.
You can instantly see that these are well made. The materials used and the quality of the high polished aluminum are excellent. Unfortunately, the one thing that lets them down is the plastic tire protectors on the tire levers. After a few uses, these are liable to fall off. You can, however, still use the levers once they do.
There are no such problems with the quality of the CO2 bike tire inflator. It’s made entirely of aluminum and has a universal head compatible with both Presta and Schrader valves. The Airace Bike Tire Lever Set also comes with an insulated sleeve for the CO2 cartridge.
Unfortunately, unlike the other CO2 bike tire inflators we’ve reviewed, the Airace inflator does not have a regulator. This is a big miss. There’s no doubt that it makes controlling the airflow very difficult. When the bike tire has inflated to the desired pressure, you just have to pull it off the valve.
We can’t dispute the fact that it works. But we would honestly prefer a more elegant solution.

7 Zefal Co2 Fez Control Fc Pump With Cartridge
Zefal has approached the design of a CO2 bike tire inflator very differently to most other companies. Rather than manufacturing a hammerhead kind of inflator, Zefal has made an inline bike tire inflator. It’s an interesting solution, and it does have one main advantage.
The inflator is approximately six inches long and looks like the flexible nozzle on a normal bike pump you attach onto your innertube’s valve. The flexibility and shape of the inflator, therefore, makes it easier to inflate your tire.
Operating most small bike inflators can be a bit fiddly as your hands are forced into a small space.
The Zefal Co2 Fez Control Fc Pump can be used with both Presta and Schrader valves. It has a universal attachment. The regulator is positioned towards the middle of the hose, which makes it relatively easy to operate. Unfortunately, though, there are no directional instructions on the regulator. Oh well!
The Zefal Co2 Fez Control Fc Pump comes with a single 16g gas cartridge provided. You can, of course, use any size of bike gas cartridges.
There’s no doubt that when you use one of these inflators, the cartridges become freezing. You need a sleeve or some kind of protection for your fingers, or you run the risk of getting frostbite. Sadly, Zefal has failed to provide anything to help protect your hands.

The regulator that controls the gas flow is excellent. We don’t have a single criticism of the regulator they use. The bottom line is that they completely nailed it.
Firstly, it uses a good-sized lever rather than a screw-type valve. The size of the lever makes it smooth and easy to operate even when wearing gloves. Secondly, there are very clearly labeled on/off directional instruction. Even better, they’re large enough for even us more visually challenged cyclists to be able to see.
The Manual Transport CO2 Inflator is nice and lightweight and compact too. You’ll have no problems with slipping this, along with a cartridge, in the back of your jersey, or into a small bike bag.

The fact is that there are lighter and much smaller bike tire inflators on the market. If you’re trying to shave every gram off your ride, then this is not for you. However, for most of us, tire inflators are generally so small and light that a bit of extra bulk and weight will make little to no difference.

This is the most expensive of all the bike tire inflators. It does, however, have a couple of innovative features. So, the question is, do the innovations justify the slightly higher price tag?
The first innovation is at the connection of the bike tire inflator to the cartridge. Where the cartridge screws into the bike tire inflator, you can see a shroud of plastic that sticks out. The purpose of this is to protect your fingers from freezing when you release the gas.
It’s not a bad idea and it sort of works. If you’re very careful, you can release the gas whilst keeping a grip on the shroud. However, in the real world, this is not always going to work. We, therefore, take a belts and braces approach and would still put our own cartridge sleeves on, just to be safe.
The other sort of innovative feature is the use of a button rather than a screw or lever to regulate the gas flow. It’s a neat solution. It works well, and it’s also easy to use. Our only concern is if it will hold up after repeated use. That’s a worry that we can’t honestly answer.
Other than these two differences, the Genuine Innovations Air Chuck Plus has the kind of standard features you’d expect from a CO2 bike tire inflator. It’s small and compact, it can be used with both Presta and Schrader valves, plus it can be used with all small screw in gas cartridges.

A CO2 bike tire inflator has a couple of definite advantages over a mini pump. Firstly a CO2 bike tire inflator is lightweight. Secondly, you can inflate your tires, up to 120psi, in seconds. Compared to a mini-pump, which can take a lot of time and effort to get anywhere near decent pressure, it’s a huge positive.
There are, though, disadvantages too. The CO2 cartridges are single-use; therefore, there’s a cost involved, and they’re more polluting too. Additionally, and possibly the biggest negative, is knowing how many to take out on a ride. If you end up with multiple punctures and don’t take out enough canisters, you’ve got a real problem on your hands.
Despite the disadvantages, CO2 bike tire inflators are increasingly replacing mini-pumps. This is more so on shorter rides. On longer rides, you’ll even start to see the mini pump be replaced with something appreciably bigger.
Types of Regulators

When you discharge the gas from a CO2 canister, it becomes freezing. Unless you’re wearing full-fingered gloves, which can make its operation quite tricky, you’re likely to get cold burns on your hands and fingers. You’re also likely to drop the canister, which could prevent the correct inflation of your inner tube and damage the valve.
To prevent all of this you’ll need an insulating sleeve. Nearly all of the bike tire inflators provide one. However, some of them don’t. But if this is the case, don’t worry, you can easily make one your self.
Simply measure the length of your canister, then cut an old inner tube to the required size. You’ll find that most sized innertubes will fit perfectly over a small gas cartridge. It’s a simple and effective hack to finish our buying guide with.
