Top 5 Best Chrome Spray Paints You Should Buy In 2020 Reviews
1 Rust-Oleum 7718830 7718-830 Stops Rust Bright Coat Spray Paint, 11 oz, Chrome – Best Budget Chrome Spray Paint
This is a great spray if you’re looking for something while on a tight budget.
The spray comes in an 11oz. can, and you get a choice of five colors. These are gold, dark bronze, copper, chrome, and aluminum. Regardless of which color you opt for, they all leave an attractive finish. Even better, the paint, when used indoors, retains its original finish and without ever becoming dull.
Nice shine, but not glossy…
The finish is classic and elegant. It creates a nice shine but doesn’t leave an overly glossy finish. In our opinion, this is an undoubted plus as too glossy a finish can make the finished product appear cheap.
One important note on this last point is that Rust-Oleum is not recommended for use outdoors. If you choose to use it on outside projects, there’s a good chance the color will become dull and faded. This process is likely to be even quicker in areas with adverse weather conditions and intense sunlight.
So, what kind of projects can you use it on?
Rust-Oleum is a versatile spray and can be used on a multitude of different surfaces. You can use it on wood, metal, and even concrete or masonry. The good news is that whatever surface or project you use it for, this paint is highly chip resistant and should keep looking good for several years.
So, all good then?
Well, not quite. The drying time is a bit of a negative. Although Rust-Oleum seems to think that 60 minutes is a fast-drying time, we beg to differ. We feel this is a little long and leaves your projects susceptible to dust and contamination.
Be sure to take extra care that you’re working in a dust-free environment when you use it.
- Nice shine finish.
- Chip resistant.
- Good color selection.
- Does not fade.
- Long drying time.
2 Krylon KSCS032 Short Cuts Aerosol Spray Paint, 3-Ounce, Chrome – Best Quick Drying Chrome Spray Paint
This is one of the more expensive paints in our review. It comes in a three-ounce can and is available in a comprehensive range of colors. Not surprisingly, chrome is one of them.
This is an enamel-based spray that can be ordered in a brush-on if you prefer.
Multi-purpose use, with a nice finish…
This paint can be used on a wide range of different materials. It can be sprayed on metal (including on auto parts), wood, stone, and even styrofoam. You can also use it on shiny plastic surfaces, provided you prime them first.
The can spray smoothly and evenly without bleeding occurring. You’re left with an elegant and shiny finish. Even better is that the finish won’t dull, and it can be used outdoors. This makes it ideal for use on your motorcycle or car parts.
If you have damaged rims, this could be a great solution for breathing some life back into tired wheels. Since enamel has waterproofing and rustproofing qualities, it’s not only a great choice for your vehicles but also your outside projects.
Short drying times…
Another big plus is its short drying time. At only 15 minutes, this makes it one the quickest drying chrome sprays on the market.
Leaving on another final positive, the Krylon KSCS032 Short Cuts Aerosol Spray Paint is also tough against knocks. It’s highly scratch and chip resistant. This is a very important quality for any paint.
Quality comes at a cost…
All in all, this is a great quality chrome spray paint. It’s on a high scale in terms of price, but we think it does more than enough to justify its price-tag.
- Sprays evenly.
- Can be used outdoors.
- Small can.
- High price.
3 VHT SP525 Quick Coat Silver Chrome Acrylic Enamel Can – 11 oz.- Best Multi Purpose Chrome Spray Paint
This is another enamel-based chrome spray paint. It offers great quality. And considering the size of the can and its price, this paint also provides better value when compared to the Krylon spray.
Use this on pretty much anything, indoors or outdoors…
The VHT SP525 Quick Coat Silver Chrome Acrylic Enamel spray can be used both indoors and outdoors. Because it’s an enamel-based paint, it’s waterproof and can help inhibit corrosion on metal surfaces. If you want to use it on plastics, wood, plaster, ceramics, or masonry, that’s fine too. The fact is that there are very few surfaces that it can be used on.
If you choose to use it outside, and specifically on metal, make sure you do the prep work first. This will ensure not only a great finish but also a quality base to inhibit corrosion.
Many colors available, with easy application…
You get a choice of 13 colors, including chrome. If you have a big project, you can opt for a six-pack value option. The savings with the six-pack are quite substantial as you save almost half when compared to buying individual cans.
The application is easy. The paint goes on evenly and leaves a rich high gloss finish. The paint doesn’t fade outdoors, it’s resilient to UV light, poor weather conditions, and is chip and scratch-resistant.
Cares for the planet…
Finally, VHT also gets full marks for its environmental credentials. The paint is both lead-free and ozone friendly. The polar bears will be dancing on their icebergs, if they can find one.
- Great value.
- Can be used indoors and outdoors.
- Anti-corrosive properties.
- Environmentally friendly.
- The spray nozzle is a little stiff.
4 Dupli-Color Shadow Chrome Black-Out Coating Kit (SHD1000) – Best High Gloss Chrome Spray Paint
This is the anti-chrome of paints. If you want to paint over chrome work, then this is the paint for you.
The kit includes two cans, as part of a two-step process. You get a black base coat and a high gloss clear coat. After your normal preparations, you spray your chrome surface with the black-out paint. When you’re happy with the finish, you apply the second clear coat.
Great for chrome wheels…
As with most of these sprays, it is likely to require more than a single coat of base black-out. It may require as many as three or four coats for the best finish. We advise applying a couple of layers of the clear coat too. If you follow good principles of preparation, you can get a great result that lasts.
This is a perfect product for use on chrome wheels. It will give a whole new look to the wheels on your car or motorcycle. So much cheaper than paying for a new set.
Super durable paint protection…
The paint is resilient to chipping, scratching, and heat. You can use this paint on any chrome, indoors or outdoors, and with the peace of mind that it’s durable and won’t lose its black gloss finish.
The paint is so tough that it will even withstand high-pressure jet washing and is more than strong enough to stay put regardless of the weather. There’s no doubt that this paint is tough, but we still advise caution when filling up at the gas station.
Keep the paint away from any kind of gasoline or white spirit, or all your good work could be quickly ruined.
- High-gloss finish.
- Scratch and chip resistant.
- Produces professional results.
- Preparation time.
5 Design Master 239 Black Chrome Modern Metals, 5.5-Ounce – Best Black Chrome Finish Spray Paint
This is black chrome finish paint. It comes in a 5.5oz. can and is available in just one color. On the plus side, it does look cool, although we wouldn’t describe it as being chrome black. Once applied, it looks more like a dark grey metallic color.
The fact is that if you use the can’s cap as a color reference, this is very accurate. What we don’t understand is why they insist on calling it black when it isn’t.
So, what can it be used for?
It can be applied to plastics, wood, ceramics, stone, and just about anything you can think of. The finish is durable, and it maintains its high gloss finish even when left outside under direct light and in mixed conditions.
Along with being durable over the long term, it’s resistant to chips and scratches in the short term too. This holds regardless of the kind of material or surface it’s used on. That’s a feature we’re sure you’ll all agree is great.
How about that fast-drying and smooth finish?
The Design Master 239 Black Chrome claims to be fast-drying, but we think a drying time of around an hour is realistic. It’s not the worst, but we don’t think it’s close to the best either.
This spray gives a smooth finish without running. However, very little pressure is required when you use the nozzle. A quick test-run on something first will quickly get you in-tune with the amount of spraying force you’re likely to need.
- Good value for the money product.
- Can be used on most materials and surfaces.
- High-gloss finish.
- Cool looking metallic grey color.
- Color is not as described.
- Long drying time.
Best Chrome Spray Paints Buying Guide
Suitable Application Surfaces
Before you buy any chrome spray paint, ensure that the one you select is compatible with the surface that you want to spray. Most of the best chrome spray paints are suitable for just about any surface. However, that’s not the case in every instance.
The manufacturers all list what materials the paint can be used on. If it’s not detailed in the literature, it will be on the label, most probably on the back of the can. Pay attention to this because it’s important.
Quality of Finish
The quality of finish has more to do with the quality of preparation than the quality of the paint. Make sure to thoroughly clean and prepare any material or surface you need to paint. For things like wheels and other metal surfaces, this may require multiple sanding and cleaning between multiple coats.
Also, ensure that you work in a dust-free environment. Not many of us have the good fortune to have a special spray booth. But, wherever possible, it’s best to spray in a well-ventilated and clean area. If you follow the basic tried and tested painting preparation guidelines. All will be well.
With these basics out of the way, the quality of the paint will also make a difference to the results. Though we have included five quality paints in our reviews, we think the…
…stands out because of the high quality finish it produces.
Some paints have better anti-corrosive properties than others. We’re sure you’ll agree that good preparation and undercoats are important. However, enamel paints stand out by giving your project a better chance of staying rust-free.
This makes enamel-based paints a good choice for metal projects. The enamel-based paints on our list you should consider include the…
There are different kinds of chrome finish. It’s easy to assume that just because it says chrome on the can that they all have the same color or finish. Trust us; they don’t. You need to look carefully at the can lid and check the samples, if there are any.
As well as having what most would consider a standard chrome-colored finish, you can also get dark chrome finishes. If you’re looking for a dark look, then check out the…
This will give your wheels or project a beautiful grey metallic high gloss finish. It’s a great example of an alternative chrome-like color. Additionally, it’s a good example of a color that is quite different from the description on the can.
Spray pints are generally fast-drying. The faster they dry, the better. It allows you to be able to work with less waiting time and apply multiple coats much more quickly.
Having fast drying times also reduces the chance of your newly sprayed pieces becoming contaminated with dust. Short drying times are, therefore, preferable. The…
