Top 10 Best Automotive Paint Guns – 2021 Reviews
1 Fuji 2203G Semi-PRO 2 – Gravity HVLP Spray System
First up, is a spray gun that Fuji has on offer. The 2203G is suitable for both thin and thicker mixtures. And some examples of use include auto-body, furniture, garden features, fencing, along with larger surface areas such as exterior walls.
It has some great features. The coolest of which we think is the automatic system. This makes it a very easy gun to use, especially so if you are a beginner. There is just one setting to this gun. This means you have no need to manually configure it, just focus on the job in hand, without the worry of adjustments or other settings to fiddle with.
The gun itself works on an LPHV (low pressure high volume) procedure that is provided by the 1400 Watt 2 stage motor. Surfaces receive a good, even coating. You have no need to worry about the quality of the finish due to the non bleed function that is installed. This, Fuji claims, guarantees even and professional, applied coverage.
The one thing you are able to control and adjust yourself is the pattern fan. If a certain job requires a texture or pattern, by adjusting the fan control, it will help to reach your desired effect.
Keep overspray to a minimum…
The Fuji 2203G uses the gravity feed system to receive the paint to the spray gun. The gun is very lightweight and comfortable to hold. There is also a lot of reach, as this gun is supplied with 25 feet of hose. There is an air control valve in place which enables the lowering of any overspray to a minimum. It also reduces any bounce back motions.
One point to mention is, the paint cup is rather small. The volume of paint it can take is just 400cc. This may empty annoyingly often if you are covering a large surface area.
- Fully automatic system.
- Pattern control knob.
- Air control valve.
- Rather small paint cup.
2 Graco Magnum 262805 X7 Cart Airless Paint Sprayer
Next up, we have a sprayer available from the Graco range of sprayers.
The Graco Magnum 262805 X7 is specifically designed for and aimed at The DIYer, hobbyist, or remodeling contractors. If you need to spray fences, decking, interiors, or other structures, this is a model to certainly consider. It is a versatile, airless sprayer that can be used on a range of different surfaces. It can cope with water based paints as well as thicker latex paint products.
The stand out feature of this model is just how user friendly it is. Although not comparable to what a professional may use, this comes a very close second option for your odd jobs or latest project.
A wheeled cart with the suction pump attached allows free movement of the motor and pump. This portability is a great feature. The appeal to this is the fact that the cart is compatible with one to five-gallon paint containers. You are able to spray directly from the bucket. This means you have a lot more spray running time than with smaller handheld paint cup sprayers.
On purchase of the Magnum model, you will receive a durable, stainless steel spray gun. This is attached to a 25-foot long paint hose, which in turn runs to the suction pump. An RAC IV reverse-a-clean switch allows for an easy clean and flush of the system after use.
A pressure adjuster allows you to control the paint flow of your job in hand. The motor will reach up to 3,000 PSI, which gives you a lot of reach for big areas that need to be covered. For smaller projects, simply turn the pressure down to reduce the pressure and coverage range.
Mask everything up…
Due to this high pressure, there is one thing you should be aware of. That high pressure causes a greater amount of overspray than smaller spray guns. This means the masking of areas to be kept clear, must be first, well masked off and firmly stuck down.
The piston pumps that are lowered into the paint drum are stainless steel. They are able to cope with high pressure spraying over long durations regularly. On top of that, these pistons can handle various viscosities of paint, so there is no need to thin paints before spraying.
A final feature that we like to see is a reversible paint tip. Clogs are a real bind to anyone paint spraying. The Greco, however, eliminates this issue completely. If a clog appears in your feed supply, simply reverse the tip and replace it. You can then continue with your work immediately.
- Fully portable wheeled cart.
- Reversible paint tip.
- Can cover large areas quickly.
- Tendency for overspray.
- High pressure can remove masking if not applied firmly.
3 Devilbiss Finishline 4 FLG-670 Solvent Based HVLP Gravity Feed Paint Gun
Here we have a spray gun that is most suitable for use with automotive and industrial paints. The Devilbiss Finishline will give you a professional looking, shiny, smooth finish that you will be most satisfied with.
This is a versatile spray gun. Included with the purchase are three different nozzles, each designed for a variety of tasks. From DIY home projects to workshop auto repairs, this paint gun is good for everything.
Tip size selection…
For use with epoxy primers, it is best to use the larger 1.8 mm size tip. This is due to the need for a slightly thicker application of the prime to the surface area.
For topcoat base colors, reduce the tip size down to the 1.5 mm tip. The reason for this is, once the primer has been applied and prepped, it is better to apply thinner coats, but more of them. By doing so, you really can build up a nice shine to your finish.
Urethane clear coating requires an even thinner application, of which the smallest 1.3 mm tip is the best one to go for.
Quality construction and big enough for most jobs…
The Finishline 4 ensures a unique, soft spray, which also offers adjustable patterns. And a gravity fed system is used with this gun, and when sprayed on any surface, it has a high rate of delivery while providing less overspray.
The spray gun itself is constructed with anodized stainless steel. The paint cup is made of aluminum and has a reasonably sized, 900 cc volume. It is incredibly light in the hand, and it weighs just 8 ounces, unladen.
One point that needs mentioning, however, is the lack of a filter to prevent clogging. Which, when it happens, can be a right pain in the ‘wotsit,’ preventing you from carrying on spraying, during a crucial flow. However, it is inevitable for this to happen, from time to time, regardless of how long is spent preparing the paint. The simple oversight of installing a filter would have guaranteed the prevention of such an issue.
- Three nozzle tips.
- Overspray is minimal.
- Lightweight and durable.
- There is no filter to avoid clogging.
- No storage case is provided.
4 3M Accuspray Paint Spray Gun System
3M is a well known and respected all American company that specializes in all manner of automotive appliances and products. Their Accuspray is a composite body gun, and the spray tips are constructed from industrial-strength plastic. The spray head is stainless steel. The use of these materials keeps it as lightweight and as comfortable to use as possible.
The tip design is what 3M claims sets apart the Accuspray from other guns on the market. The interchangeable tips are able to cover all styles of spraying needs.
As mentioned, the tips are plastic, but also disposable. Each tip has a life of around five uses before replacement is needed. They are easy to apply and take off, with a simple click and release. No tools are necessary, just remove and discard the old tip, wipe off the needle, and then replace with a new tip.
A real timesaver…
The good thing about this feature is, it takes away the chore of dismantling and cleaning all the components, as required in other spray guns. Thus, saving a massive amount of time.
The orange colored tip nozzle is 1.4 mm and suitable for topcoats and sealers that require the finest spray coatings. A clear nozzle of 1.8 mm is set to be used for primers, lacquers, and other adhesives. This tip provides a thicker coating to your surface that these need.
Then, a red nozzle with a 2 mm tip is best-suited for use with resins, gel coats, enamels, high build primers, and latex coverings. This makes the Accuspray very versatile and compatible with a large range of products.
And there’s more cleanup time-saving…
The paint cup also uses a unique, internally fitted, disposable, collapsible liner. You do not fill the cup with paint, like other models. Instead, you place the liner inside the hard cup and then fill that with your paint. Pop on the filtered lid and then thread a retainer ring onto the cup.
The PPS (Paint Preparation System) process just needs you to then twist lock the cap to the spray gun body, and you are ready to go. This system further reduces the cleanup process.
Spray upside down…
If any paint is left in the liner, you can cap the lid, and it will be kept fresh for the next time. Due to the liner being fully sealed, this means you can spray while holding the gun in any position and have no worry of drips or spillage, even upside down. This is a feature that many other spray guns on the market are simply unable to do.
The vacuum formed from the seal means that every drop of paint is used, making it one of the Best Automotive Paint Guns around.
- Very little clean up.
- Spray at any angle.
- Suitable for many kinds of products.
- Some ‘traditionalists’ may be put off by the plastic components.
5 REXBETI Ultimate-750 Paint Sprayer
The REXBETI Ultimate 750 spray gun is an all plastic unit that is most suited for the home DIYer. It’s suitable for spraying furniture, doors, shutters frames, and other similar items around the home.
The plastic construction means that it is extremely lightweight. So the Ultimate 750 comes with a larger container than some of the other guns we are looking at in this review. And the canister will hold up to 1000 milliliters of varnish, paint or lacquer.
In actual fact, the entire size of this unit is a little on the large side. The design is striking, with the orange and black color theme. It has been well thought out ergonomically, as well. The large structure, though, could possibly, prove cumbersome in tight spray situations. Just a thought we feel worth a mention.
With this model, there is just the one spray tip nozzle. It does, however, adjust to three different spray patterns. At 45 degrees, the spray will exit in a circular pattern. Twist it to 90 degrees for a horizontal spray. Position it to 180 degrees for a vertical spray layer. There is also a smart flow control knob to allow flow adjustment at any time you require.
Quiet yet powerful…
This uses an advanced electric motor to spray. The motor is more powerful and much quieter than in other spray guns that work in this way.
The look you get from the Ultimate 750 is comparable to a roller like finish. It will not produce a clear and smooth surface. However, it is perfect for use on cabinets, dressers, and exterior walls, for example.
- Very light.
- Easy to control and use.
- Large capacity paint cup.
- Some may consider it to be on the large side.
- Total plastic construction.
- Roller like finish only.
6 Tekna 703517 Prolite Fluid Tip Spray Gun
Tenka has on offer, this little ProLite fluid tip spray gun. It is a small unit, and it comes uncupped, but has a DeKup adaptor with TE20 and HV30 air caps. The specialty of the ProLite is that it has been designed to be used in any kind of climate. And you can run pretty much any kind of paint you like through it as well.
Paint reacts and behaves differently at different temperatures. Some can become more fluid when warm, while a cooler climate will thicken them up. The three air caps and internals of the gun are designed to use advanced fluid dynamics technology. This means the atomization can be adjusted to suit the conditions you are working in. All of this is packaged as a handy solution that allows you, the sprayer, to adapt to your environment.
So easy to clean…
The ProLite is a great little number to run both solvent based and water based coatings through. The body of the spray gun is stainless steel and easily cleanable after use. The body is fully protected inside and out with a high corrosion resistant coating that also has quick clean, non stick properties.
There are two included nozzle tips that come with the ProLite. One is 1.3 mm, and the other is 1.4 mm, so there is not a lot of versatility or difference to the spray range as with other available guns. However, there is a unique fitted ‘no kick’ co axle air valve, which will allow you to make blends and fades easier to control.
- Can work in both cold and hot working conditions.
- Quick clean, non stick coating.
- Excellent atomization.
- Only two nozzle tips with very small diameter difference.
- No paint cup supplied.
7 Ingersoll Rand 210G Edge Series Gravity Feed Spray Gun
Ingersoll Rand has this nice, gravity fed spray gun available at the moment.
This gun is an easy unit to use. You will find it to be most suitable for tackling a wide variety of DIY or hobby projects. If you want to spray paint, stain, or lacquer onto furniture, decking, frames, doors, and more, then a 210G does the job well. It is also a good little spray gun for automotive restorations and body panel touch ups.
Non drip design…
This is another spray gun that works on the gravity feed system. The stainless steel body has the paint cup attaches to the top. The plastic paint cup size is adequate, at 20 and one-quarter ounces. The cup itself is fully sealable and non-drip. That is good to know, as with some gravity fed spray guns, it can be an issue because of the various angles you tend to move the gun around.
There are fluid and spray pattern adjustment knobs. These allow you to set the gun to layer and coat at different breadths and thicknesses. You are able to cover and paint your project with great precision, making this one of the Best Automotive Paint Guns currently available.
The amount for adjustment is not as wide as on other models we are looking at in this review, however. This is due to the fact that the 210G is only supplied with one nozzle tip, which is set at 1.4 mm. So, although you do have some adjustment control to your coatings, it is limited because you are only ever able to push your solvent through the same size hole
Operating air pressure for this model is up to 50 PSI. This can also be adjusted to control how much airflow, which, in turn, permits how much paint you want to come out at any one time. This aids with the thickness of paint you want on your surface.
- Non drip paint cup.
- Adjustable pattern and fluid controls.
- Only one size of nozzle tip.
8 Titan Controlmax 1900 PRO High Efficiency Airless Paint Sprayer
Here is the second airless spray gun we are featuring in this review. On offer as apart of the Titan product line.
The 1900 PRO is designed to spray, directly out of larger paint drums. You can place the pump directly into, between one and five-gallon paint tubs. The airless pump will suck your chosen paint up and though the machine with no trouble. This is a fully portable machine as it is fixed to a wheeled cart for maneuvering around your workspace.
For the serious handyman or DIYer, this is a high output machine. It is able to spray all kinds of unthinned stains and paints with less mess and more control than you may get from other products. For thick exterior wall coverings, driveway/workshop floor paints or latex ceilings, the 1900 PRO will give you the desired finish you want.
A quality consistent finish…
A High Efficiency Airless (HEA) system is in place. This allows you to deliver a softer spray coverage, and this ensures a consistent finish, always.
A clear advantage to the HEA system is that it reduces overspray by up to 55% when compared to other spray units of this style. With these larger size sprayers, overspray is a big issue. Time saved by the quick spraying process can easily be lost with the clean up if you have not masked off the entire surrounding area. This is not so much of a concern if you use the 1900 PRO.
Quick as a flash…
As just mentioned, this is a speedy sprayer. It can push 0.40 of a gallon of paint through the 515 spray nozzle tip (making it great for latex coverings). Other tips can be used with this sprayer, though only this one is supplied with it, and you will need to buy the other sizes separately. Pressure can be adjusted at the .70 HP motor, and you have 25 feet of feed pipe, which allows you free movement over a fair distance from your paint and pump.
One point to mention that we feel may be an oversight is that there is no filter at the nozzle. There is one at the pump end but, we have never seen a product of this type with no nozzle filter. Maybe Titan knows something we do not? Only time and long term use will tell.
- HEA system greatly reduces overspray.
- Quick and powerful sprayer.
- Can pull through thicker paints and latex coverings.
- Only one size nozzle tip is supplied.
- No nozzle tip filter.
9 TCP Global Professional Gravity Feed HVLP Spray Gun
Here we have another gravity fed spray gun, available from TCP Global. This unit really does have a quality feel about it.
The spray gun is of a more petite size than other guns we have included. Constructed from good old stainless steel. The gun body is comfortable to handle. Likewise, to disassemble for clean up. And the aluminum spray paint cup is one liter in capacity.
This small size does not affect the finish you will get when using the TCP Global gun. To ensure this, a baffle head assembly is fitted. So, you are able to produce fully atomized, consistent spray patterns that result in an even, smooth, and professional looking finish.
Superb for jobs in confined areas…
Auto bodywork touch ups, or spraying in confined areas of a vehicle, such as an engine bay, really suit this spray gun. Also, for smaller pieces of furniture with intricate, hard to reach areas that bigger guns will be unable to get to. It is also very lightweight at just 2.85 pounds, again aiding maneuverability.
For the spraying of clear coats, base coats, single stage, and other medium to light viscosity materials, the TCP fluid nozzle tip is ideal. The tip is 1.4 mm, and although you only get the one nozzle, it is fully adjustable. However, it would have been a good idea for TCP to provide a larger tip nozzle for such things as high build primers. As the 1.4 tip will struggle with thicker consistency paints.
You can determine the fluid control to gauge the thickness of each layer of paint sprayed. And the operating air pressure can go as low as 29 psi and up to a maximum of 51 psi (2-3.5 bar). Combining the air pressure with the fluid control will allow you to set the pattern width. This can range from 5.9 inches up to 7.1 inches wide.
Though the TCP is more suitable for smaller, detailed jobs, the finished results mean this is no less of a spray gun than others in our review. And it can easily be considered as one of the Best Automotive Paint Guns on the market.
- Small size suits it for spraying more difficult to reach areas.
- Good range of pressure.
- Fully adjustable nozzle tip.
- Smaller size paint cup.
- Would be good to also have a larger nozzle tip.
10 Wagner Spraytech 0529031 Motocoat Car & Truck Paint Sprayer
The last spray gun we are to take a look at in our review may raise a few eyebrows. Times are changing, as are methods and the designs of spray guns. Offered from Wagner Spraytech, this product has been designed solely for the automotive market. However, you could use this for other spraying tasks, but it is not really recommended.
The MotoCoat uses a totally different approach compared to the traditional style of vehicle spray gun. For a start, it is made almost completely from plastic. The other big difference is that rather than connecting it to a regular air compressor, this model is connected to and powered by its own X-Boost turbine and an electronic motor, fitted within the spray gun. This means it works on an HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) system.
Plenty of length, maybe too much?
The gun is attached to the turbine unit with a 39-foot length of hose. That is a nice and substantial length of hose, and great if you are operating in a large workshop.
However, it may have been better if Wagner had split it into two pieces using a release valve. This is because, in smaller, more confined conditions, the hose can easily twist and block the airflow. That is most certainly, something you do not want when you are in the middle of spraying.
Excellent amount of coverage…
Due to the X-Boost turbine, the Wagner offers HVLP, so runs at a lower pressure than compared with other guns that run from a compressor. If you keep working for a full hour, you are able to pump out up to eight gallons of material. We are not suggesting you will do so, but, as you can see, that is a lot of coverage for the time.
A choice of nozzles…
Two separate nozzles are included on purchase. You receive an iSpray nozzle that is able to spray thicker, protective coatings with a textured finish. Great for stone chip, rust inhibitors, and rubberized style paints. Most suited for spraying pickup beds, in wheel arches, sills, and undercarriages.
The other is a ‘fine detail’ nozzle. This will spray thinner materials. So, for car bodywork resprays and lacquers, this nozzle gives you an even and smooth finish.
Both nozzles can be adjusted. So, you can spray vertical, horizontal, narrow, and wide patterns.
This model is a cheaper and quicker way to respray automobiles. Traditionalists may wonder about the dramatic change in style, compared to the ‘old skool’ style spray guns. But, for us, this could well be the way to go.
- Powerful X-Boost turbine.
- Modern and new design.
- Can spray both thick and thin materials.
- Long hose can become twisted.
- Plastic construction may put some buyers off.
Best Automotive Paint Guns Buyers Guide
So, there we have our selection of the range of different types of spray gun currently on the market.
But before you can decide which model to go for, you need to have an idea of the kind of use you intend it for. Also, what kind of materials do you wish to apply? Only after answering these two questions, can you then consider which style of spray gun you should be looking for.
Within our feature, we have included spray guns that are suited for different jobs, while some of them can also cross over and have the versatility for multiple tasks.
As you can see, designs, methods, and materials are changing. The more modern approach to some guns is to now use plastic over traditional stainless steel and aluminum. HVLP guns are becoming more common, too. These use their own pressure supply, rather than connecting up to a compressor.
First, consider the jobs…
The Wagner Spraytech catches our attention. This is due to its totally different design and method of spraying, as opposed to traditional air fed spray guns.
Wagner has an interesting new approach. For a start, the complete unit is constructed from plastic. Then the power is run on the HVLP system, rather than air pressure, fed from a compressor. A spray gun like this, Wagner claim, is quicker, more efficient, and can spray all kinds of different automotive materials. If you want to try a new modern take to spraying, this could well be worth consideration.
Close up work…
The TCP Global is also worth a mention, we feel. Here is a very small spray gun that is suited to detailed, smaller areas of work, such as body work striping. You can also get up close and be sure of complete coverage in hard to reach areas of the body of a vehicle. Although only supplied with one nozzle tip, there is a good range of pattern adjustments. This is a model also suited for other DIY work, on furniture or dressers, for example.
Then there is the 3M Accuspray gun. This has an interesting and unique design feature. That being, the spray tips, and paint cup liners are fully disposable, so removing the need for any kind of clean up. 3M have a reputable name, and if you are after a quick and easy spray gun, this could be the one. And, yes, the Accuspray can be used for other home DIY jobs too.
Good for all climates…
If you are located in the colder Northern States, or equally so, in the lower hotter States, the ProLight is a gun worthy of consideration. Professional workshop facilities usually come with either cooling or heating installed. A home workshop may not have such a luxury. If you are spraying outside, you most certainly do not.
Paint materials and the finish applied can react differently at different temperatures. The ProLight, however, has a climate control system in place within the gun. So if you are working in more extreme temperatures, this is surely worth a closer look.
High Pressure Airless design…
Another style of sprayer we looked at is the high pressure, airless paint gun. We looked at two here, the Graco Magnum and the Titan ControlMax.
Both are very good sprayers, which is why we chose to include them. This kind of sprayer is suited to the big jobs. Exterior/interior walls, decking, floors can all be done in no time with this style of machine. They rely on a pump rather than a compressor to push the paint. And large drums, of up to five gallons, full of water based or latex paints, can be sprayed in the minimum of time.
But watch out for overspray…
Due to the high pressure these pumps produce, a lot of force is produced through the gun. So, overspray becomes a big issue when using one. The Titan model has a soft spray function, which, they claim, heavily reduces this. But, both will do a great job at covering large surface areas, evenly, efficiently, and quickly.
Best for the DIYer…
One last spray gun we will remind you about is the REXBETI unit. From the home DIYer point of view, this is probably the one to consider. Although not suitable for vehicle spraying, it is for all those other spray jobs around the home, so this could be the one.
It is an all plastic design and quite a large sprayer. But it is able to spray a wide range of substances, thick and thin through its system. This is a durable, user friendly sprayer that would be great to have on hand for the odd job, as and when you need it.
