Safety is the most important issue in tire manufacture and rightly so. Tires have different strengths or ratings measured in “ply.” The “ply rating” lets you know how many layers of rubber there are built-in to the tire. The higher the Ply rating, the stronger they are. When you are carrying a heavy load, it is important to have a strong tire.

It is commonly published that the first truck was invented and used in Ohio in 1899, but this is inaccurate. The first truck was invented by Gottlieb Daimler in Germany in 1896. The following year they were being built for bus services as well as haulage. And in the same year, Peugeot and Renault had manufactured their versions.
John Dunlop invented the first pneumatic tire in Northern Ireland in 1888.
It first appeared on cars in 1895, and it seemed to take an awfully long time to put the two products together. The wheel had been around nearly 5000 years by then, so maybe we are not as clever as we all think we are? The first wheels were wood or metal and gave an awful ride.
Then we had a solid rubber version, and finally, Mr. Dunlop’s invention was used commercially. The Tires were all Bias-ply and had inner tubes. The radial came along in Europe in 1948 out of necessity.

Michelin was one of the earliest companies to start manufacturing tires. They have built a worldwide reputation and were founded in France, in Clermont-Ferrand, in 1889. They are still based there but now have partners around the world.
This Defender tire is suitable for all SUVs, light commercial vehicles, and crossovers. One of the great assets with this tire is the amount of traction you can achieve. It excels in both snowy and wet conditions with a very short stopping distance in the wet.

It is a radial tire with a tread combination of zig-zag patterns and blocks with a synthetic fiber filling. This is considered to be one of Michelins’ most durable truck tires. Its longevity means you will have to change your tires less often. That is a feature that is important. It must mean this tire is considered as one of the Best 10 Ply Tires for Trucks if only because it is going to save you money.
Time for some specs…
It has a very eco-friendly design, and over its lifetime, it is expected to save you about 65 gallons of fuel. It has an estimated distance use of 70,000 miles. The tire width is nine and a half inches, and the rim size is 17 inches. It has an ‘R’ speed rating, although all manufacturers now suggest a maximum of 65 if that is a legal speed in your country. There is a 10 ply ‘E’ load range.

This is an ST or Special Trailer tire from Gladiator. ST tires must not be used on a steering axle. As such, it is not strictly a truck tire. They have sidewalls that are strengthened to eliminate any potential to roll over when the trailer is fully loaded. The sidewalls have a 2 ply rating. It is designed to haul loads that are quite heavy.
It has a 117/112 load index rating and an ‘N’ speed rating. That is actually over 80 mph, so it is unlikely you will be using that to its maximum. The width of the tire is 8.85 inches, and the diameter of the rim is 15 inches.
It has a maximum load rating of 2830 pounds. That is a designated weight per tire. So to work out what the total for the trailer would be, simply multiply the weight by the number of wheels.
This is a radial tire that is steel belted, which gives it a higher weight capacity than some other similar tires. It is designed with a non-directional tread. This means that it can be fitted in any position on your trailer. This makes life a bit easier when it comes to fitting. It is made in China.
It should be noted that this is a tire only and does not include the rim. Also, it is just worth repeating is that it is not suitable for use on a vehicle; this tire is for trainers only. It is set at an attractive price point.

3 Carlisle Radial Trail HD Trailer Tire – Best Value for the Money 10 Ply Truck Tires
This is a very affordable 10 ply tire option from Carlisle. It has what might be termed as a fairly standard build. It is 8.85 inches wide and has a fifteen-inch diameter of the rim. The weight loading index is a decent 117.
This tire will support a load of 2830 pounds at a maximum of 80 psi. That means for a two-wheel trailer; it will support 5660 pounds. You must remember, though, that a good part of that weight will be the actual weight of the trailer itself. They are suitable for both short and long-distance use.
The compound rubber used in the construction has been specially designed to be long-lasting and durable. It will also take its share of a few knocks. It has a deep tread, which offers very good traction, even in wet conditions. And has a directional tread pattern, which is good for vehicle control. However, you will have to ensure it is fitted in the correct position on your trailer.
This is a 10 ply ‘E’ rated steel-belted radial tire that is well-made and quite tough. For its price point, it represents a budget deal. However, the quality of the tire is good, and there should be no concerns about it being low-quality. The trick is to only ever load up your trailer with about 80% of what it is capable of handling. That way, the tires will give you years of use and many miles of service.

Tires, for obvious reasons, actually look quite similar. But every now and then, you see a tire, and it looks fit for purpose, and you know exactly what it is for. This Federal Couragia Radial tire is fit for purpose and looks like it.
This is a tire that has been designed to handle all sorts of surfaces but excels in the mud and rain. Sharp turns, and even tight corners are no problem. They are not only good for smaller trucks and trailers, but they are good on an SUV as well. They have a very thick tread and deep grooves. This helps to disperse any water and improves handling and also traction.
Self-cleaning and clearing…
The design of the tire gives you plenty of grip and control, even in loose sand or mud, which is a relief if you have ever been stuck and didn’t have the grip to get out. There is plenty of space in the tread for it to perform a self-cleaning and clearing operation. This is, so that loose mud or sand doesn’t get clogged if you are off-road.
They are a 10 ply design radial with a strong 3-ply wall. They also have protection built-in on the upper shoulder. This helps to avoid deep abrasions or chips in case of some unwanted contacts. There is also a block design to give the tire a stiffness and security when under pressure.
A bit noisy…
They certainly are built for the worst, though it does have to be said they perform better if the weather is not extreme and very cold. If there is one downside to what is a very good tire, it is the tendency to make a lot of road noise.

Firestone is a name synonymous with tires. Founded in 1900 by Harvey Firestone, they have grown to be one of the major players in every kind of tire manufacture. In 1988 they were sold to Japanese tire company Bridgestone. Bridgestone was the sole supplier of tires to the world’s largest track racing organization, Formula 1.
They ceased interest in 2009 and were replaced by Pirelli. Firestone themselves had once been a supplier of tires for Formula 1 for many years in the 50s. They have quite a track record if you will excuse the pun.

They have a polyester tread with steel bracing, which promotes strength but also makes them hard-wearing. You can expect at least 60,000 miles for these tires. This will enable them to last for many miles. Tread blocks vary in size. The idea of this is that it helps to reduce road surface noise. They have an ‘E’ load range rating. The majority of people looking for tires for a truck will be perfectly aware that there are differences between tires. Some are made specifically for the truck, and these are usually prefixed or at least acknowledged with ‘LT’.
But there are some that are for trailers only and are not suitable for the vehicle that does the pulling. These are’ ST’ tires. These tires by Trailer King are ST tires for the trailer. Not really applicable to a review of the best 10 ply tires for a truck.
But let’s have a look anyway…
If you are or will be looking for a trailer tire, then this Radial from Trailer King is going to be of interest for a number of reasons. The design includes a groove in the center of the tread to offer consistency in tracking. They also have a strengthened shoulder that reduces heat. This, in turn, will increase the life of the tire.
It is a 10-ply rated tire, so it has plenty of strength, and it includes a nylon overlay in the construction. This is a valuable asset to a tire as nylon is hard-wearing and will increase the life of the tire. They are made in China.
A cost-effective option…
They are 8.85 inches wide and have a 15-inch diameter of the rim. It does have a lower index rating than an ‘LT’ tire at 117. The speed rating is rated at ‘L,’ which is more than adequate for normal use. You should note that there are no rims included with this purchase; they are tires only. They have a very cost-effective price point that makes them an attractive option for tires for your trailer.

Another tire manufacturer that needs little introduction. A name well-known for many years with a respected reputation. This is another tire that looks like it might bite if you get too close.
This is a 10 ply ‘E’ rated tire that is suitable for your truck or SUV. It is suitable for use in most weather conditions as well as for going off-road if necessary. It will certainly be a great performer in the snow and any mud you may encounter. In fact, it has an accreditation from the auto industry that says it is suitable for use in the snow.
Reduced road noise…
The design of the tread works in your favor in a number of ways, the center blocks are what they describe as high-angled, and there are microgrooves in the tread. This certainly gives you a lot more traction than you might normally get on bad surfaces. But it also works to reduce road noise while driving.
Further design features include the ‘biting edges’ which will enhance the grip even further. It also has rim protectors. These are placed on the sidewalls of the tire and give protection for accidental contacts with the curb.
The design features do not stop there; it is essentially a self-cleaning tire should you be using it in muddy or bad conditions. This is courtesy of the shoulder block design that is included for just that reason. This is an ‘LT’ tire with a rim size of 18 inches, and it has a load rating of 125. The tire width is 10.82 inches, and it has an ‘R; speed rating.
Powerful and very strong these tiers will handle most of what you can throw at them. Of course, they are very hard-wearing. But the length of use you get them from will be determined to a certain extent on what you use them for. Used off-road, they are likely to wear out quicker than if they are used just for road use.
A good 10-ply option and must be considered as one of the Best 10 Ply Tires for Trucks. Not a cheap option, though.

8 Hankook Dynapro AT2 RF11 all_ Terrain Radial Tire-LT245/75R16 120S 10-ply – Best Premium 10 Ply Truck Tires
The Hankook Dynapro RF10 was a top-selling tire, and this is the upgrade. Certain to place it amongst one of the Best 10 Ply Tires for Trucks. This is an ‘E’ rated 10 ply radial tire that is suitable for light trucks. It is designed to be good in the snow and wet, and so it can handle most bad weather conditions. The traction is good, which makes it also good in muddy conditions and on loose gravel.
It is made from durable rubber and has sidewalls that are reinforced. This will provide at least some protection from punctures when on poor roads. The groves and sipes are multi-directional, and it has edges with blocks that bite into poor surfaces. There are locking shoulder lugs that also assist the grip and traction.
It is more than an off-road or bad weather tire and performs well in what you might call normal conditions and gives a good ride. It is not the quietest tire you will find, but it is extremely strong and durable. And is an ‘LT’ tire, so it is suited to a range of trucks that are not too heavy. It has a tire width of 9.64 inches and a rim diameter of 16 inches. It has a load index rating of 120 and an ‘S’ speed rating.

Best 10 Ply Truck Tires Buying Guide
There are many things to consider when replacing tires. Some of which will be obvious to some, but we will mention them anyway, just in case…
Firstly, always replace your tire with one of the same size. Don’t try a heavier tire because they will carry more or a smaller one because they are cheaper.
Asymmetrical or Symmetrical
You will have the option of an asymmetrical or symmetrical tread. The latter has the same tread all over the tire, both inner and outer sections. Asymmetrical tires are not the same tread pattern. The fact that there are varying shapes and grooves means that these tires are often better in rain and snow. They usually offer better grip and traction if you are heading to poor weather or bad conditions.
When you buy a new tire or more, the load is something to consider. The Load Index of the new tire must be at least the same as what is one the vehicle at the moment. Load ranges are described by letters. You can check those easy enough on the internet.
If you are buying for the truck, they should be ‘LT’ tires. If you are buying for a trailer, they should be ‘ST’.
The price is sometimes a good indicator of real heavy duty quality. You don’t often get very cheap tires that are 10 ply and road-ready. There are some fluctuations as there in all things. Being at the bottom of a price range doesn’t mean they are inferior. Being way out of it might mean they are. This is a serious business, and without being dramatic, lives can depend on it.
